Wine Country Day Trips from Almaden Valley
Wine Country Day Trips from Almaden Valley
Living in Almaden Valley puts you closer to quality wine country than most Silicon Valley residents realize. The Santa Clara Valley AVA — one of California’s oldest wine regions — stretches south from San Jose through Morgan Hill and Gilroy, with more than 50 wineries operating within a 30-minute drive of Almaden Expressway. Before the tech boom reshaped the valley floor, this region produced more wine grapes than any other part of California, and a new generation of winemakers is reviving that heritage.
Morgan Hill and San Martin Wineries
The Morgan Hill wine corridor, accessible via a straight shot down US-101 from Almaden Valley, packs 15 wineries within 15 minutes of its downtown. This concentration makes it easy to visit three or four tasting rooms in a single afternoon without spending much time driving between stops.
Guglielmo Winery on East Main Avenue has operated continuously since 1925, making it one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the Santa Clara Valley. Their estate-grown Petite Sirah and Zinfandel reflect the warm inland climate that distinguishes this area from cooler coastal regions. The tasting room opens daily, and the shaded patio works well for groups bringing a picnic.
Kirigin Cellars in Gilroy occupies the historic Solis Ranch, where grapes have grown since the 1850s. The property sits on rolling hillsides with views that stretch across the valley, and weekend visits often coincide with live music on the patio. Their Malvasia Bianca is a standout for visitors who prefer whites.
Fortino Winery and Solis Winery in nearby San Martin offer different takes on Santa Clara Valley reds. Fortino leans into big, bold Zinfandels, while Solis produces balanced Sangiovese and Syrah from foothill vineyards.
The Morgan Hill Wine Trolley
For groups that prefer not to designate a driver, the Morgan Hill Wine Trolley runs guided tours on weekends throughout the year. Each tour includes stops at three partner wineries, a champagne reception, and a guide who covers the history of the region. The trolley operates out of downtown Morgan Hill, roughly 25 minutes south of Almaden Valley via US-101. Tickets run around $90 per person and sell out during peak fall weekends, so booking a week or two ahead is advisable.
Saratoga and the Mountain Wineries
Heading west instead of south from Almaden Valley leads to Saratoga, where a handful of wineries occupy hillside properties above the town center. Cooper-Garrod Vineyards sits on a 120-acre ranch the family has farmed since 1893. The tasting room overlooks Silicon Valley, and the property doubles as a horseback riding facility — an unusual combination that makes for a memorable day trip. Their estate Cabernet Franc performs particularly well.
Mountain Winery, higher up on Pierce Road, hosts a summer concert series that pairs wine tasting with live performances in an amphitheater setting surrounded by vineyards. Shows typically run June through October and feature nationally touring acts.
New Almaden: Wine at Your Doorstep
The closest winery to Almaden Valley is practically in the neighborhood. Alamitos Vineyards Estate operates in the historic New Almaden hills, just off Almaden Road south of Quicksilver County Park. The tasting room and event space provide a wine country experience without the highway drive, making it a viable option for a late afternoon visit after picking up kids from Leland High School or Bret Harte Middle School.
Planning Your Trip
Best time to visit. Spring brings green hillsides and mild weather. Fall harvest season (September through November) offers crush events, grape stomps, and the liveliest tasting room atmosphere. Summer works fine but temperatures in Morgan Hill and Gilroy climb into the 90s, making air-conditioned tasting rooms more appealing than outdoor seating.
From Almaden Valley. Morgan Hill wineries are 20 to 30 minutes via US-101 South. Saratoga wineries run about 20 minutes via Highway 85 North to Saratoga Avenue. New Almaden is under 10 minutes south on Almaden Road.
Food options. Pack a picnic to enjoy at wineries with outdoor seating, or stop in downtown Morgan Hill where restaurants along Monterey Road offer everything from farm-to-table California cuisine to casual taquerias. Several wineries allow outside food but do not serve meals, so planning ahead ensures a complete outing.
What to bring. A cooler for wine purchases, sunscreen for outdoor tasting patios, and a designated driver or trolley reservation. Most tasting rooms charge $15 to $25 per flight, often waived with a bottle purchase.
