Golf Courses Near Almaden Valley

Almaden Valley sits at the center of one of the South Bay’s strongest golf corridors. Within a 15-minute drive of most homes along Almaden Expressway, golfers can choose between a prestigious private club, challenging public courses carved into the surrounding foothills, and two Jack Nicklaus-designed layouts that draw players from across the Bay Area.

Almaden Golf and Country Club

The neighborhood’s namesake course is Almaden Golf and Country Club, a private 18-hole layout nestled in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains along Almaden Expressway. The course features well-maintained fairways, manicured greens, and some notoriously sticky rough that punishes wayward drives. Membership is by invitation, but the club occasionally opens for charity tournaments and community events that give non-members a chance to play the course.

Beyond the golf, Almaden Golf and Country Club functions as a social hub for many Almaden Valley families. The clubhouse hosts dining events, holiday parties, and junior golf programs that introduce kids from nearby Leland High School and Bret Harte Middle School to the sport.

Cinnabar Hills Golf Club

Cinnabar Hills Golf Club on McKean Road is the premier public course in the Almaden Valley area. Designed by award-winning architect John Harbottle III, Cinnabar was San Jose’s first new public course in 30 years when it opened. The 27-hole facility features three distinct nine-hole layouts — the Mountain, Canyon, and Lake courses — each offering different terrain and challenges.

The Mountain nine climbs into oak-studded hillsides with elevation changes that reward accurate iron play. The Canyon nine winds through natural ravines, while the Lake nine plays around water features on flatter ground. Green fees for 18 holes typically run $70 to $120 depending on the day and time, making Cinnabar a mid-range option that delivers a near-private-club experience at public course prices.

The drive from central Almaden Valley takes about 12 minutes south on Almaden Road, passing through the historic New Almaden area along the way.

Santa Teresa Golf Club

Santa Teresa Golf Club on Bernal Road sits just north of Almaden Valley in the Santa Teresa Hills. The 18-hole par-71 course is operated by the City of San Jose and offers some of the most affordable green fees in the South Bay. The layout follows rolling terrain with views across the Santa Clara Valley, and the back nine provides a genuine hill-country feel rare for a municipal course.

Santa Teresa draws a loyal local following, particularly among Almaden Valley retirees who take advantage of weekday morning rates. The course is accessible via Camden Avenue or Bernal Road, roughly a 10-minute drive from the Almaden Expressway corridor.

Coyote Creek Golf Club

Coyote Creek Golf Club on Coyote Road in Morgan Hill offers two Jack Nicklaus-designed 18-hole courses: the Tournament Course and the Valley Course. The Tournament layout is the more demanding of the two, with sweeping views of the Diablo Range and strategically placed bunkers that test every aspect of the game. The Valley Course plays through meadows and marshland along Coyote Creek, offering a different but equally engaging experience.

Coyote Creek’s location about 20 minutes south of Almaden Valley via US-101 makes it a bit farther than the closer options, but the Nicklaus pedigree and the quality of conditioning draw South Bay golfers who want a premium round without the membership commitment. Green fees run $80 to $150 depending on the course and time of day.

Boulder Ridge Golf Club

Boulder Ridge Golf Club on Old Hillsdale Avenue is tucked into the sun-baked hills between Almaden Valley and the Silver Creek area. The course features dramatic elevation changes, with several tee boxes perched on hilltops offering panoramic views of the Almaden and Blossom valleys. The layout demands creative shot-making — straight hitters will enjoy the narrow fairways, while long hitters may find the steep terrain punishes distance over accuracy.

Boulder Ridge operates as a private club through Bay Club, but public access is available during select times. The drive from Almaden Expressway runs roughly 15 minutes east.

Driving Ranges and Practice Facilities

For golfers who want to work on their swing without committing to a full round, Almaden Golf and Country Club and Cinnabar Hills both maintain practice facilities available to their respective members and guests. The closest standalone driving range is Rancho del Pueblo Golf Course on South White Road, about 20 minutes northeast of Almaden Valley. This par-3 course also provides a low-pressure environment for beginners and families.
