Almaden Lake Park Guide
Almaden Lake Park Guide
Almaden Lake Park is the community gathering place at the heart of Almaden Valley. This 65-acre city park on Almaden Expressway near Winfield Boulevard wraps around a 32-acre lake and packs more recreational variety into one location than any other green space in the neighborhood. For families along Almaden Expressway and Camden Avenue, the park functions as a backyard extension where morning joggers, weekend picnickers, youth sports teams, and evening dog walkers share space year-round.
What the Park Offers
The facilities reflect decades of investment by the City of San Jose:
Walking and jogging paths. A paved loop circles the lake, covering about 1.3 miles. The flat, smooth surface accommodates strollers, wheelchairs, and casual walkers. Runners and cyclists use the path year-round, and the lake views keep the scenery interesting even for daily users.
Playgrounds. The park has two playground areas serving different age groups. The newer all-inclusive playground was built with a .3 million matching grant from the County of Santa Clara. Ramps, transfer platforms, sensory panels, and accessible swings ensure kids with physical limitations can play alongside their peers. The second playground features more challenging climbing elements for older children.
Picnic areas and barbecue pits. Multiple reservable and first-come-first-served picnic sites with grills, tables, and shade structures. The Lakeview, Peppertree, Quicksilver, Southpoint, and Arroyo areas handle everything from small family gatherings to large corporate picnics. Reservations can be made through the City of San Jose Parks Department at [email protected].
Sports facilities. Sand volleyball courts, bocce courts, horseshoe pits, and basketball courts provide organized recreation beyond walking and picnicking. The basketball courts draw a regular crowd of teens from Leland High School and adults on weekend evenings.
Amphitheater. An outdoor performance space hosts community events, summer concerts, and neighborhood gatherings with sloped seating for several hundred spectators.
Pedal boats. Available for rental during summer months, providing a unique perspective on the lake that kids particularly enjoy.
Fishing at Almaden Lake
The 32-acre lake supports populations of largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish. Shoreline fishing is permitted, and the paved path provides access to most of the perimeter so anglers can find quiet spots even on busy weekends. Important: due to mercury contamination from the area historical quicksilver mining, all fishing at Almaden Lake is strictly catch-and-release only. Fish should not be consumed, and warning signs are posted throughout the park.
Trail Connections
Almaden Lake Park serves as a hub connecting several trail systems. The Los Alamitos Creek Trail runs south from the park along the creek corridor for 4.7 paved miles. The Guadalupe River Trail southern section connects northward toward downtown San Jose and the VTA light rail. These connections make the park a practical starting point for longer walks, runs, and bike rides that extend well beyond the lake loop into the broader San Jose trail network.
Parking and Access
Two main parking lots serve the park: one off Almaden Expressway (west side) and one off Winfield Boulevard (east side). Daily parking fees are collected year-round via automated machines accepting cash and credit cards. Arriving before 9 AM on spring and summer weekends avoids the worst parking crunch. The park is also accessible by bike via the trail network and by VTA bus routes along Almaden Expressway.
When to Visit
The park stays active year-round, but peak use runs March through October. Summer weekends draw the heaviest crowds with picnic areas filling early and parking lots reaching capacity by 10 AM on warm Saturdays. Weekday mornings and late afternoons are the quietest times, preferred by runners and dog walkers. Winter visits offer green grass, cool temperatures, lighter crowds, and occasionally dramatic skies over the lake.
